expands health programs
By Mark Collette The Daily News
LEAGUE CITY — College of the Mainland has expanded its health-related course
offerings after acquiring more space at its League City campus.
The college will begin offering a medical assistant program in January. It
has already added a dental assistant program and duplicated the nursing
assistant program that already existed in Texas City, college officials
said.
There was no room for the new programs at the Texas City campus, said Cissy
Matthews, dean of allied health and public service careers.
In May, college district voters rejected a $103 million bond issue. Projects
would have included new facilities for nursing and emergency medical
programs.
The new space also allows the college to expand dual-credit classes, in
which high school students enroll in college courses while earning credit
toward a high school diploma.
The building in League City has traditional classroom space, but is also
designed to mimic a real dental or medical clinic, from the waiting room to
treatment rooms.
“Students don’t like to travel far, and so we’ve located them in an area
where there’s not any other community college-based programs like that,” she
said.
The college is also planning to offer EMS classes at the north campus. It
already offers them in Texas City.
Matthews said between 40 and 60 high school students attend dual-credit
classes in League City.
