REP.
TAYLOR NAMED "CHAMPION FOR FREE ENTERPRISE" BY TOP BUSINESS ASSOCIATION
submitted by Cari Christman
(AUSTIN) Representative Larry Taylor (R-Friendswood) was named "Champion for
Free Enterprise" by the Texas Association of Business (TAB) for receiving a
voting record of 90 plus on legislative issues relevant to Texas business.
This legislative session only eight senators and 33 representatives earned a
score of 90 or above.
"The Texas economy would not be thriving as it is today if it were not for
businesses, large and small, in our state," Taylor said. "When businesses
compete for dollars in a free market system, consumers reap the benefits."
The report is viewed as an accurate measurement of lawmakers' attitudes
toward business. Businesses count on it to judge who in the Capitol puts
jobs, economic prosperity and a vibrant workforce at the top of their
priorities.
Many pro-business bills passed during the recent session. Of those bills,
Rep. Taylor successfully sponsored legislation that allows large and small
employers to group together for purposes of purchasing more affordable heath
care. When employers have the ability to pool together and spread the amount
of risk among their employees, premiums become more affordable. Rep. Taylor
also supported legislation correcting unintentional technical errors in the
recently revised franchise tax. The new legislation provides greater tax
relief to small businesses with the use of discounts based on a sliding
scale. The scale ranges from 20 to 80 percent for entities earning $300,001
to $700,000. Those entities with $300,000 or less in total revenues are
currently exempt from the tax.
Rep. Taylor is a member of the House Appropriations Committee, House
Insurance Committee and House Calendars Committee. He represents District 24
in Galveston County and is serving his third term in the Texas House of
Representatives as a member of the 80th Legislature.
