Replace mayor in League City
By Heber Taylor The Daily News
submitted by Joanna Sharp
In the race for League City mayor, we recommend Toni Randall, a business
owner who became politically involved when her father-in-law became
embroiled in a dispute with the city about his gun range.
This endorsement is unusual in that Randall has the least knowledge about
the workings of city hall of the three candidates in the race.
The incumbent, Jerry Shults, is the best candidate on paper, with
educational credentials and experience in business and government.
But the workings of city government in League City often have been
bewildering.
For years, people pointed to Galveston's city hall as an endless source of
amusement. But League City's decision to oust one garbage contractor in
favor of another - and the way it awarded the bid - could only have happened
in League City.
That action would have failed the smell test in Galveston. It would have
been unthinkable in Texas City.
If that were the only example, voters could write it off as an unusual lapse
in judgment. But League City's list of examples of questionable dealings is
long. Of the major cities in Galveston County, it has the shakiest
administration at the top.
Chris Mallios, who has been a member of The Daily News' readers advisory
board, has an encyclopedic knowledge of League City and is a champion of
open government. But we think voters would be best served by entrusting the
office to someone with a lot of experience in managing a business or
institution.
Randall has a background in business. She's plainspoken and believes in
customer service. She strikes us as the kind of person who would let the
professional people on the city's payroll do their jobs.
We usually like to see political experience in a candidate for mayor. But
having little experience in League City's politics may be a good thing.
