Bay Area Toros Training Camp Report
by David Crane
Texas City, TX - The Bay Area Toros Professional Baseball Club opened
training camp for the 2008 season with a roster of 37 players from 16
different states. The Toros, beginning their second season as members of the
Continental Baseball League, will hold 14 workouts during training camp at
Robinson Stadium in Texas City, Texas. The Toros will play a 72 game
schedule with 36 home games against the other three teams in the CBL, the
Texarkana Gunslingers, McKinney Blue Thunder and Corpus Christi BeachDawgs.
The Toros will open against the ‘Dawgs on May 23 at home with first pitch
slated for 6:35 p.m.
Toros General Manager, Mike Pede, commenting on the team’s organization
stated that “the majority of our players this season have participated in an
offseason workout program, an organized winter league or are coming to us
directly out of college, so we are really looking forward to getting things
going.” Pede will look to second year Manager Jim Bolt to again lead the
Toros to the CBL Championship game, where they finished last season with a
loss.
Bolt pointed out several players that stood out in the first two workouts.
“Brandon Sisk, Will Smeltzer, and Keegan Laycock really looked good and they
are returners so we need some leadership from them this year. Our new
catcher, Kyle Wells, I thought was outstanding and a leader and we have a
great crop of pitchers that we really need to step up now that we are
playing 72 games and 6 game weeks. We have to have depth to survive and I
think we have done a great job putting together a roster for camp. Getting
down to 25 by May 17 will be difficult, but Mike, Jim (Mallory) and myself
can get it done and put a good team on the field.”
Toros practices are open to the public and the media. Credentials for the
media will be available from David Crane beginning on May 12, and requests
should be sent to davidc@bayareatoros.com or by calling the phone number
listed above. All media must be approved by the CBL and credentials will be
mailed or held at will call until picked up. All Toros practice times for a
four day stretch are posted on www.bayareatoros.com on the home page and are
subject to change due to weather. Call David Crane for further information.
