League City Councilman Tad Nelson announces
his decision to seek a third term on the League City City Council
by Onzelo Markum III
“I’m excited to seek a third term on the City Council,” said Nelson. “We
accomplished a great deal during my last term, such as a strong ordinance
regulating where sex offenders can live in the city to keep our children
safe, an enhanced anti-solicitation ordinance to stop residents from being
harassed during family time, and we increased our sales tax revenue by more
than 40% to over $8,000,000/yr. We added more than 15 police officers to the
police department, made our award-winning EMS service a city department, and
added new services like commercial trash recycling to do our part for the
environment. We did all of this while lowering taxes every year due the
fiscal conservative philosophy of Mayor Jerry Shults and council and the
professional skills of the city’s management team.
On the other hand there is still work to be done. We have some unfinished
business to attend to, such as ethics reform, improving our infrastructure,
and managing our growth wisely. I will continue to work toward finding a
solution to these critical issues.”
Councilman Nelson was first elected to the City Council in 2000 and elected
again in 2005. Councilman Nelson
has been a strong champion of bringing high-quality commercial economic
development like Home Depot, Kohl’s, JC Penny’s, and Wal-Mart to the city as
a way to keep property taxes low on residents.
A proven fiscal conservative, League City’s tax rate has been lowered every
year that Councilman Nelson has served, yet city services have increased in
quality and public safety has been improved with the addition of more than
15 police officers since he has been elected. Councilman Nelson also voted
to give League City police officers the ability to meet and confer with the
city on wages, benefits, and working conditions as a way to recruit and
retain the best qualified employees for the department.
“Serving League City is an important part of my life," Nelson said. “League
City Proud is more than just a slogan to me. As a lawyer, a small business
owner and a husband, I feel as though my life experiences allow me to
understand a broad range of issues and make key policy decisions for the
constituents of League City. My parents taught me to appreciate all opinions
but to maintain my strong conservative values. I believe voters desire a
council member that listens and considers their concerns, yet remains
faithful to his core beliefs. The citizens of League City can continue to
expect that from me and I would appreciate their vote to return me to
council.”
Councilman Nelson is an attorney in private practice with offices in League
City and Galveston and has been married to his wife Leslie for fifteen
years. The Nelsons attend St. Peters Catholic Church where Tad was confirmed
in 1977 and served as an alter boy from 1974 – 1981.
