Congratulations to Melanie Calverley
Submitted by Kimberly Wilkerson
Melanie competed in the U. S. Adult National Figure Skating Championships
held April 9 - 12, 2008 in Lake Placid, New York. She received a silver
medal for second place in the final round of the Silver Ladies Class II
level free skate, gaining the title of the 2008 U.S. Silver Ladies II silver
medalist. Calverley was one of the very few competitors in her group who
successfully completed a clean axel.
Calverley recalls how she felt the day of the competition: "I received an
awesome response from the audience. So many people that I did not even know
complemented me on my program afterward and I was flattered. I had an
exhilarating skate, and I feel great that I was able to make a connection
with the audience.”
In the end, only the four top finishers took home medals. Calverley trains
diligently at the Space City Ice Station in Friendswood, Texas. She is also
a Basic Skills coach at the facility on a part-time basis; she is a
full-time Senior Engineering Planner with Lockheed Martin. When she is not
training or coaching, Calverley enjoys spending time with her husband, Cary,
and their Weimaraner puppy, Sapphire.
