Bay Area Toros officially welcomed to Texas City Team announced plans for scholarship fundraising and Fan Fest
by Mike Pede

Texas City (TX) – The Bay Area Toros, members of the Continental Baseball League, were officially welcomed to their new home, Texas City, today at a press conference at the Charles Doyle Convention Center. Joined by Mayor Matthew Doyle, city officials, local businessmen and dignitaries, the team launched its first full season in Texas City. “We have really been welcomed with open arms by everyone in the Texas City community and look forward to winning some games on behalf of the people of the bay area and especially here in Texas City,” said Mike Pede, the Toros GM and Chief Operating Officer.

The Toros, an independent league team in its second season, will play a 72 game schedule, beginning with the season opener on May 23, 2008 against the Corpus Christi BeachDawgs at historic Robinson Stadium. After going on the road for two games that weekend, the Toros return home for their first home stand of the season, beginning May 27. The team also announced a special initiative for that week to honor retiring Texas City ISD Superintendent Richard Ettredge, by designating it “TCISD & Toros Funding the Future Week”. At each game during that homestand the team will donate tickets to every elementary, middle and high school in the entire district to come to games during the week and then donate 20% of the ticket sales to a special scholarship fund in the name of the retiring Superintendent. Ettredge will be honored himself on Thursday, May 29 at the game between the Toros and the McKinney Blue Thunder at 6:35. Fans interested in participating in the special event and fundraiser, can purchase tickets at www.bayareatoros.com and enter the promotion code “TCISD” when prompted.

The team also announced plans for the first ever Toros Fan Fest. “Completely free for the entire community we will have clinics for the kids, boys and girls, batting practice on the field, hot dogs and beverages, a community fair, Baseball 101 for the ladies, photos with the team and just a chance for us to meet and greet our neighbors,” said Pede. The event is free and open to the entire Bay area and will be from 1:00-4:00 on May 18 at Robinson Stadium in Texas City.

For media information on the Bay Area Toros, please contact Mike Pede at 281-768-5979 or via email at mikepede@bayareatoros.com. All media are invited to attend all practices, exhibition games and regular season games. Credentials will be distributed to media outlets during the week of May 14.
