“SIDS” SUDDEN INFANT DEATH SYNDROME
FUNDRAISER IN MEMORY OF AUDREY TAYLOR ZAVESKY
by Deborah Beard
SET FOR SUNDAY, APRIL 20, 2008, IN CLEAR LAKE A special fundraiser to
benefit the American SIDS Institute and increase awareness of SIDS (Sudden
Infant Death Syndrome) is scheduled for Sunday, April 20, 2008, at
Sherlock’s Pub at 2416 Bay Area Boulevard in Clear Lake from 7 p.m. until 12
midnight. This event will honor the loving memory of three month old Audrey
Taylor Zavesky, a Clear Lake area victim of SIDS.
In addition to live music, there will be free pool all evening as well as a
raffle and an extraordinary silent auction. Drinks are Happy Hour price all
evening. There will be no cover charge, but all participants must be at
least 21 years of age to support this special event.
SIDS or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is the number one cause of death in
infants between one month and one year of age. It is sudden and unexpected
and even after an autopsy is performed, no cause of death is found. In a
typical situation, parents go to check on their infant they think is
sleeping only to find their baby dead. Since the American SIDS foundation
was founded in 1983, the annual number of deaths has decreased by over half;
however, there are still about 2,300 babies who die of SIDS each year in the
United States.
To help cope with the grief that came after losing her three month old
daughter Audrey to SIDS on September 22, 2006, Shanna Pajares turned to the
American SIDS Institute which is dedicated to the prevention of Sudden
Infant Death Syndrome and the promotion of infant health through research,
education and family support. In the past year Shanna has tirelessly worked
to raise funds to benefit SIDS and to increase awareness of Sudden Infant
Death Syndrome.
Lives are forever changed after the death of a child, and in her short three
month life, Audrey Taylor Zavesky captured the hearts of all
who met her. Over 300 mourners paid their
respects to Audrey and her family after her passing.
Shanna Pajares wants to get the word out that while scientists around the
world are working to find the cause of SIDS and how to prevent it, there are
things parents and caretakers can do to reduce the risk of SIDS. For a
complete list, go to the SIDS Institute’s web site at
www.sids.org .
Three things that are easy to remember and can
significantly reduce an infant’s risk of SIDS are: 1) SMOKE-FREE: Do not
smoke during pregnancy and don’t ever let anyone smoke around your baby. 2)
BACK TO SLEEP: Place your baby to sleep (day and night) on her back in a
crib or bassinet with a firm mattress. Place the crib close to the parents’
bed. 3) BARE CRIB: Nothing should be in the crib but the baby and the
clothing needed to stay warm (but not too warm). This means NO pillows,
blankets, toys, bumpers or positioning devices.
