League City Partners with County Tax Office
by Cheryl Johnson
League City leaders voted March 25th to partner with the Galveston County
Tax Office for collection of property taxes, a move that will result in
substantial savings for city taxpayers.
“This decision demonstrates the City’s confidence in the Tax Office team. I
am both honored and humbled by the vote of council,” stated Galveston County
Tax Assessor Collector Cheryl E. Johnson. “Eliminating duplication of effort
through consolidation of tax collections results in real savings for our
local governments and simply makes good economic sense.”
Cost of collection is $0.32 per parcel for Galveston County properties and
$1.01 per parcel for properties located in Harris County. With nearly 33,600
properties located south of the Creek and slightly more than 300 to the
north, total cost of collections is estimated at $11,000 per year.
As a result of this partnership, Galveston County will be collecting
property taxes for all cities across the county which has been a long time
goal of the Tax Office. In addition to the 13 cities, the County collects
taxes for five of the nine school districts, both junior college districts,
and 11 of 40 special purpose districts.
The conversion will begin in April and is expected to be completed in July.
