Fire on the Strings Bluegrass Festival 2008
submitted by Judy Sturgeon
Time to start planning for the 2008 "Fire on the Strings" Bluegrass
Festival. This is the annual fundraiser for the Bay Area Bluegrass
Association, a non-profit corporation that sponsors a monthly jamming event
and bluegrass show free to the public. BABA fosters education and
preservation of this uniquely American musical genre, and backs up their
mission statement with hard work and good music for everyone.
The festival features something for everyone: young and less young,
traditional and contemporary, pickers and listeners alike. This event will
be showcased at the excellent Conroe/North Houston KOA facility, May 15-17,
2008. The grounds boast indoor stages with AC/heat to offset any kind of
weather. Bring your friends and family, stay the weekend and plan on having
a great time with wonderful folks and fine bluegrass music.
Cabins or RV hookups are available to those who want to stay for the whole
event - or longer to enjoy attractions of the lovely Lake Conroe area as
well as the charming town of Montgomery, Texas. Local hotels/motels and
restaurants are conveniently near the festival grounds.
Lineup includes the Texas State Competitions for banjo and flat-picking
guitar, the Texas Junior Bluegrass competition, and a braggin' rights
quality lineup that features: The Claire Lynch Band, Audie Blaylock and
Redline, Robert Hale and Wildfire, Hickory Hill, The Spring Creek Bluegrass
Band (from Colorado), The Bluegrass Solution, Classical Grass, and The
Lonestar Bluegrass Band. While any lineup is subject to emergency changes,
none are expected. Jamming rooms and workshops will be available; outdoor
areas will be designated for open-air jamming also. There will be a silent
auction, raffles, food and vendors of all sorts for your alternate
entertainment. Check out the websites for early ticket sales and for the KOA
grounds. Contact Rick Kirkland
